Hydration
How to stay hydrated
Every day, we lose fluid as part of our normal bodily functions, on average:
- 1250 ml via urine
- 500 ml via breath
- 500 ml via sweat
- 100 ml via faeces
To replace the water we lose and keep our bodies working properly, adults need the recommended 6-8 glasses (2 litres) of fluid a day, including the fluids we obtain from our food, such as fruits and vegetables. (The body of a 10 stone adult contains 40 litres of water.)
Ideally, this should be spread throughout the day - approx. one drink every two waking hours.
Never wait until you are thirsty to have a drink, this means you are already starting to become dehydrated.
