Legislation

The UK food industry is well regulated, with the safety of our consumers and our employees being the top priority.

There is a general requirement that food available for sale must be safe and traceable and not presented in a way that is misleading to consumers. The details of this are set out in several pieces of legislation:

  • The Food Safety Act 1990
  • General Food Regulations 2004
  • The General Product Safety Regulations 2005
  • Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Practices Regulations 2008.

Under The Food Safety Act 1990, Britvic and its employees are responsible for the products we produce and sell.

More specific regulations cover:

  • the types of ingredients used
  • hygiene
  • drinks packaging
  • labelling
  • storage and handling.

The Food Hygiene Regulations 2006 apply to anyone working with food or drinks, and make all employees personally responsible for their actions with regard to personal hygiene. Minimum standards must be followed in the following areas:

  • Hygienic operation Factories must meet minimum hygiene standards for premises design, structure and equipment.
  • Food safety controls Factories must identify and prevent food safety risks at each stage of production, with controls in place and maintained.
  • Personal hygiene including personal cleanliness, hand-washing, personal health and protective clothing.
